When we first moved into our house, we were told that we MUST go to the Old Town Farmers’ Market in Alexandria. I am kind of a sucker for farmers’ markets so it didn’t take much convincing. We’ve been so busy getting settled this past month that we just barely got an opportunity to go this morning and it did not disappoint! It was one of the best farmers’ markets that we’ve ever been to! We highly recommend going if you are in the area and are looking for something fresh to eat or if you want some beautiful flowers.
The Old Town Farmers’ Market is a large market that completely covers the Market Square in Old Town. It had just about everything from fresh fruits and veggies, to pastries, to flowers. We bought some delicious peaches, vegetables, and (of course) a small bunch of peonies. Peonies are my favorite! It was nice to just walk around and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. The market square and Old Town area is so charming!
I think what makes this market so special is that it’s been going on for over 260 years! We’ve heard that George Washington even went to this market and sold his produce from Mount Vernon here. It was fun to think about that with the upcoming holiday and imagine what the market would have been like when George Washington visited. It still amazes me how much history there is in our new city! There is so much to learn about. I am finishing up 1776 by David McCullough which heavily focused on George Washington. After reading McCullough’s book, I have a new appreciation for what our Founding Fathers and others that fought for the American cause went through to establish our country. I am trying to figure out which book to read next -I want to learn more about the history of the D.C. area specifically. Any good recommendations??
